Edgars is an all-star CYKL coach! He infusions his classes with his race/riding experiences from the road, mountain, and cyclocross courses! Even though he looks tough (coming to classes with bruises, stitches, and black eyes, from sports related mishaps!), he’s one of the most genuine and inspiring people. Edgars teaches a rocking CYKL45 on Wednesdays at 12:15pm!

Read more about Edgars and his hopes for 2012 here:

CYKL: Looking back, tell us about a highlight (personal or fitness related) of 2011?

Edgars: Highlight – finally doing a controlled look at my eating plan and dropping 8lb before the season opening race, and then recording my best finish at the killer-awesome Paris to Ancaster Race. I posted 2nd in my age cateorgy and 14th overall out of 3000.

CYKL: What is one key thing you learned about training, specific to you in 2011?

Edgars: Focus and positive energy. It is easy to ride 100 to 150km and complete it. It is not easy when you lose focus and you let your body make decisions for you. I have fallen victim to my own body sending mixed messages. I learned in 2011 if you don’t push yourself into uncomfortable territory often, then you will never learn how to function when you get there. I sort of adopted Jens Voigt’s quote… when your legs are telling you to stop, you respond with “SHUT UP LEGS”.

CYKL: What’s your big fitness goal for 2012?

Edgars: Fitness goal is to seek out what my limits are. Year after year I have continuously improved my performance. I have not seen my cap, yet where things are affected by age. There is a podium with my name on it, and the top step is mine! Maybe I’ll try the cyclocross master worlds this year?
CYKL: What’s your big personal goal (outside of the athletic world) for 2012?

Edgars: Balance. Continue to find ways to be a source of experiences for my kids and for my family while exceeding my career goals in advertising and marketing.

CYKL: If you could tell people 1 thing about keeping their new years resolutions what would it be?

Edgars: A resolution made for you has a better chance than a resolution made for the benefit of others. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who don’t.

The Winter Base Training is off and riding! Week 2 was the Lactate Threshold Field Test! What the heck does this mean?

Well, our riders had to come to this session well rested, hydrated, and fueled, as well this LT test requires a heart rate monitor. The session begins with a long warm up and then we get our riders to push up to LT for 8 mins and repeat. We take the average of both sessions and calculate their training zones, which they will use for the next 10 weeks.

The LT field test and heart rate training zones are a great tool to use while you’re training throughout the winter. It keeps your effort true while you train, especially throughout long endurance rides, where many riders start the ride pushing too hard.

Next week is filled with more form & technique tips, single leg drills and a long ride in the saddle based on HR Zones. Fun times!

CYKL’s Winter Base Training Program sold out in record time (before Christmas!)!! The first session was yesterday! The studio was packed with awesome energy, as Kim got the 12 week program underway – bike set-up, form, pedal stroke and single leg drills.

This year we have a great mix of new riders and returning riders, who completed the program last year! Every rider has a different reason or goal for completing this 12 week periodization program. Some riders are doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer in June, others are doing triathlons or road races (some in Europe!), and some riders are long distance runners looking for a training alternative. It’s going to be exciting to see the progress of our riders throughout the next 12 weeks, and hear their stories from the road in the spring and summer!

WBTP – Week 1

Krista is a CYKL Rockstar! She’s one of the original coaches to start with us almost 2 years ago! She’s best know for her intense TABATA Tuesdays, where she whips your body into a shape with tough timed sprints. She has a huge following, who love to go to her classes throughout the winter for cross training! Check out what she thought about 2011 and what she has planned for 2012.

CYKL: Looking back, tell us about a highlight (personal or fitness related) of 2011 was a fantastic year.

Krista: I completed my first half marathon and have never felt stronger!

CYKL: What is one key thing you learned about training, specific to you in 2011?

Krista: Listen to your body. Know when to slow it down to give your body chance to recover – but also know when to keep freakin’ pushing!!

CYKL: What’s your big fitness goal for 2012?

Krista: In 2012, I will be in the best shape of my life. And to successfully finish the 2012 Kenda Mohican – 100 kms on my mountain bike – bring it!

CYKL: What’s your big personal goal (outside of the athletic world) for 2012?

Krista: To simplify. Life doesn’t have to be crazy.

CYKL: If you could tell people 1 thing about keeping their new years resolutions what would it be?

Krista: It doesn’t have to be just New Years to make resolutions. Constantly challenge yourself to be better, happier, stronger 365 days a year.

Krista’s teaches kick ass CYKL45 on Mondays at 6:45pm and Tuesdays at 7:45pm, and the hardcore CYKL90 on Sunday at 9am.

Andrea has been a part of the CYKL community for almost a year now! With the nickname “killer”, she’s been pumping out classes that push limits and burn legs. Here’s what she’s got to say about 2011 and her goals for 2012!

CYKL: Looking back, tell us about a highlight (personal or fitness related) of 2011?

Andrea: Completing Ultraman Canada

CYKL: What is one key thing you learned about training, specific to you in 2011?

Andrea: I learned that you always have something left. Even if you feel like you’ve got nothing left in the tank, and you feel like you can’t keep pushing, you always have something left.  Always.

CYKL: What’s your big fitness goal for 2012?

Andrea: My big fitness goal is to race Ironman Mt.Tremblant.  Not just complete it, race it!

CYKL: What’s your big personal goal (outside of the athletic world) for 2012?

Andrea: Continue to keep pushing myself out of my comfort zone.

CYKL: If you could tell people 1 thing about keeping their new years resolutions what would it be?

Andrea: Don’t just settle for a new year resolution, you can make resolutions all year long.  : )

Check out Andrea’s killer Sunday CYKL60 at 11am!
